Solid Conductors

Where little vibration exists and no flexing is required, solid or single strand conductors may be acceptable. The advantage of a solid conductor is lower in cost than that of equivalent stranded conductors. Constructions with solid conductors are normally used as hook-up wire for small instruments, chassis wiring, or any similar fixed installation.

For the convenience of our customers, we stock an extensive range of soft annealed bare and tinned copper wire in six through forty gauge. All soft bare copper wire complies with ASTM specification B22-63 and soft tinned copper wire with ASTM specification B33-63. We can supply whatever special put-ups you require, such as one pound, two pound, five pound or ten pound spools. We can furnish electrolytic copper, OFHC copper, plated copper, copper alloys, stainless steel, titanium, dumet, monel, nickel, nickel-plated copper, silver-plated copper, and others, including precious metals.

Stranded Conductors

Stranded Conductors are used in most electronic wire and cable applications to provide better limpness, flexibility and longer flex life. From a practical standpoint, stranded conductors offer longer service life than solid conductors. For a given size of a conductor, increasing the number of strands while reducing the size of the individual strands will increase the conductor flexibility.

The manner in which the members of a stranded conductor are twisted together is termed the stranding. We manufacture three basic types of stranded cables: bunch, concentric and rope lay constructions. You will notice from the wire sizes used in our constructions that all of our strands and cables are designed for maximum flexibility and minimum diameters. Most of these constructions are used in applications where flexibility is of primary importance. Conductors are generally manufactured of bare or tinned copper wire, although strands and cables used for special purposes may be constructed of silver-plated copper, nickel-plated copper, stainless steel, cadmium bronze, phosphor bronze aluminum, monel, brass, pure silver, pure nickel, nickel-clad and other precious metals. Bare and tinned copper wire are warehouse stock items.

The constructions listed do not constitute our complete line. Please contact our sales department for further information.
