Litz Cable Coil and circuit designers are constantly faced with the problem of losses due to skin and proximity effects. These losses are caused by the tendency of current to flow only on the surface of wires at high frequencies. To combat these problems, it is necessary to increase the surface area without a large increase in the size of the conductor. This is accomplished by bunching together several strands of fine, film insulated wire with special attention being given to the fact that it is desirable to have each wire in the group brought to the surface of the conductor with some regularity. Thus, the conductors are formed into groups which are cabled in a geometric pattern, permitting each wire to occupy every possible position in the entire length of the cable at some point. This is a very desirable characteristic in some applications where capacitance is a consideration. Whenever reference is made to litz wire, it is considered that the wire is film insulated (actually a magnet wire). This insulation may be polyvinyl-formal, polyurethane, polyurethane-nylon, modified polyester, polyimide or any of the other film insulations. Most constructions are then further insulated with a fiber serve, either over the entire cable or over component strands. Insulations may be servings of nylon, silk, cotton, dacron, high-temperature nylon or fiberglass. When the outside diameter exceeds one quarter inch, it is often preferable that the outer insulation is in the form of a braid rather than a serving. On occasion, an extruded synthetic jacket may be employed. We have made thousands of litz constructions for many V.L.F., L.F., M.F., and H.F. applications. A few of the applications for litz wire include transformers, inverters, communication equipment, ultrasonic equipment, sonar equipment, television equipment and radio equipment. We have also provided special constructions to meet the toughest applications for use in inductors and command antenna systems, as well as delicate magnetic pick-up coils. In this section of our catalog, we have listed some of the possible constructions available in each of our eight basic types. Types two through eight are generally made to order to meet customers' specific requirements. Many type one constructions are carried in stock. Type eight is a rectangular or square litz construction. Our range of configurations includes from the very finest conductors, to cables as large as four inches in diameter containing up to eighteen thousand wires. We will be pleased to cooperate with you to provide the litz constructions to meet your specifications. |
